This fund was established to honor the life and distinguished career of Dr. J. Lee Garvey, Jr., who was a long time Carolinas Medical Center Emergency Medicine faculty member, Vice Chair, and visionary leader in emergency cardiac care and research. In addition to being an exceptional leader, Dr. Garvey was also an accomplished educator and scientist. He was a pioneer in the emerging field of emergency medicine, and his work was transformative in the care of acutely ill cardiac patients.

Dr. Garvey was instrumental in the regionalization of emergency cardiac care and was passionate about innovation in emergency medicine. He constantly challenged himself and his peers to strive for more efficient and effective medical practices and protocols, and to seek out ways to elevate healthcare quality. His efforts in these areas have undoubtedly saved countless lives.

The J. Lee Garvey, Jr., MD Emergency Medicine and Cardiac Care Innovation Fund will support the development and implementation of Emergency Medicine and Cardiac Care programs at Carolinas Medical Center (CMC), including support for innovations in emergency cardiac care,  medical and laboratory supplies, and research projects led by CMC Emergency Medicine faculty, fellows, and/or residents.
